ABOUT CDS
Applying Principles of True Teaching: The CDS Pedagogy
- The first principle of true teaching is that nothing can be taught.
- The second principle is that the mind has to be consulted in its own growth.
- The third principle of education is to work from the near to the far, from that which is to that which shall be.
Sri Aurobindo
Sri Aurobindo’s three principles of true teaching are the guiding principles for all pedagogy and learning at CDS.
The second principle is that the mind has to be consulted in its own growth. At CDS, learners choose topics to work on, according to their own inclination and interests. Only the theme framework is provided within which everyone explores. All are encouraged to develop ideas in their own way. Within the overall bouquet of subjects offered in the curriculum, the learners have the freedom to choose their own mix. The learning process allows students to work on an assignment till they are completely happy with the outcome. Unlike other design schools where even incomplete work is required to be submitted and graded dictated by a fixed time-table, in CDS there is never a deadline pressure. This brings out the best in every assignment, and students learn to insist on excellence in their own work each time.
The third principle of education is to work from the near to the far, from that which is to that which shall be. Before every new assignment at CDS, the learners review what has already been done in a particular area of human creativity, by looking at the best examples and the works of the great masters. This sets the benchmark, over which the learners have to excel and take their work forward. The wonderful work done by CDS foundation students, consistently breaking new ground, is proof that this method works.
At CDS, it is our endeavor to nurture individual subjectivity, creativity, originality and unpredictability. We see this as the way to stay ahead of AI, and to let the learners flower into uniquely valuable individuals.

All are full-time programs of 4 years duration, with a common Foundation Year. The area of specialization can be chosen at the time of admission, or decided at the end of the Foundation Year. Students are allowed to change the specialization indicated at the time of admission, and also take electives from other specializations from 3rd semester onwards; according to their planned career path.
The course contents and approach to all the areas of specializations ensure that the students will excel and take leadership position in the post-AI world of design practice. All are encouraged to use the latest application tools in their work right from the beginning; so that all become accomplished users with full proficiency with the most advance design applications.
B.DES. PROGRAMS
New Programs for Needs of Tomorrow
B.Des.
Communication Design (CD)
Besides developing high professional competence in all conventional areas of Communication Design practice (Publication Design, Branding and Visual Identity, Packaging Design, Wayfinding and Signage etc.), the CD program lays great stress on areas where AI tools cannot provide acceptable solutions, such as location and culture specific needs. Cross-media Design; Design in Indian Scripts, Information and Instructional Communication and Design Innovation for Unmet Communication Needs of the Society are some of the areas of focus in the Communication Design program at CDS. Working on live professional projects is an integral part of learning at CDS, through student participation in CDS Creative Studio projects.
B.Des.
Experiential Graphic Design (EGD)
The specialization in EGD is being offered for the first time in India by CDS, acknowledging that it is the completely experience of interacting with an enterprise that decides its success, not individual graphic design components. Experiential Graphic Designers specialize in creating compelling experiences, both digital and physical, utilizing the new interactive media capabilities and environmental art, in addition to conventional communication design solutions. Already established internationally as a the most important design discipline, Experiential Graphic Designers will be the most sought after designers, as every business and enterprise needs to create consistently great experiences to be successful. As most EGD projects are location specific, the designers will always be in demand because of the customization required for every project.
B.Des.
User Experience Design (UX)
Going beyond the current role of UX designers limited to designing digital device interfaces, the User Experience Design program at CDS aims to create professionals who would design meaningful and engaging user experiences with products, processes, services, events and environments. Encompassing all aspects and stages of a customer’s experience, the program is designed to nurture individuals with the necessary intellectual and visual competence, to visualize, design and help implement unique experiences in all areas of human activity from retail to religion, and education to environments.
B.Des.
Motion Arts & Gaming (MAG)
Going beyond the now obsolete practices of designing for Animation, the course in Motion Arts and Gaming at CDS aims to prepare individuals with the ability to conceptualize, design, render and execute compelling dynamic narratives, whether to be experienced in theatres, built environments, or as part of captivating gaming experiences. Mastering and making use of Generative AI will an essential part of the process, so also the nurturing of the necessary creative competence to visualize and create original scenarios for Gaming or for Narratives. The graduates are expected to become group and team leaders in the Motion Arts and Gaming industry.
THE FOUNDATION YEAR
A Foundation for Creative Leadership in the Digital Era
The Foundation Year is the most
important part of learning at CDS, where we nurture the necessary sensitivity,
awareness and understanding of the world around, to help young minds develop the necessary ability to give form to new ideas of their own. The Foundation Year is seen as putting in place not just a structural foundation
for a strong building above, but also preparing the ground for future flowering and blossoming according to one’s own nature.
A completely new foundation program has been created at CDS, discarding the now obsolete 70 years old foundation curriculum still followed in most design schools in India, and replacing it with new explorations which ensure integral understanding of components of Digital Creativity: Analog and Digital, Parametric Variation, Process Driven Forms, Programmed Variation and a deep understanding of Natural Processes and Algorithms. The creative output of the first foundation year’s work is just a glimpse of what has been already achieved; and an indicator of future blossoms.
